Art, Community & Free Movies: Downtown Fayetteville Is Glowing This August

Pull up a chair, neighbor — because downtown Fayetteville, Georgia is glowing right now.

Just steps from the Historic Fayette County Courthouse, a painted bench is inviting strangers to become neighbors. A newly opened alleyway plaza is giving downtown shoppers and diners more room to breathe, park, and linger. And next Friday evening, families across Fayette County will spread blankets on the grass at City Center Park for the final free summer movie of the season.

Let's take a walk around the village — because a lot of good is happening right outside your front door.

What's Happening Around the Village

A Bench That Starts Conversations

Atlanta-based muralist Eric Nine recently unveiled his newest work, "The Space Between Us" — not a mural this time, but a hand-painted bench installed right on Courthouse Square in Fayetteville.

The abstract piece was inspired by how ancient communities gathered around fire — using that shared warmth as a symbol for the invisible connections between people. You'll find it along the sidewalk diagonally across from Gremlin Growlers, just north of the Historic Fayette County Courthouse at 105 Glynn Street North.

"Public art creates opportunities for people to slow down, connect, and experience a place together. I hope people don't just walk past this bench. I hope they sit, have conversations, make memories, and leave feeling a little more connected than when they arrived." — Eric Nine, Artist

Nine's work spans the entire East Coast, with a heavy presence in Atlanta's Beltline, East Atlanta Village, Little Five Points, and Castleberry Hill neighborhoods. This is actually his second public piece in Fayetteville — you may remember his earlier mural at the Trilith Guesthouse.

The bench is part of a larger Downtown Fayetteville Creative Placemaking Implementation Strategy — meaning this is just the beginning. More public art installations are planned for the city's future.

Main Street Alley Plaza: Downtown's New Gathering Space

After nearly two years of construction and a brief pause due to litigation, the City of Fayetteville's Main Street Alley Plaza has officially soft-opened behind 101–115 Glynn Street South.

The project shifted the driveway behind Courthouse Square's west-side businesses, opening up what is now a brand-new pedestrian plaza with additional public parking. Finishing touches — branded signage, planters, and other aesthetic upgrades — are still in progress, but the space is open for business.

"We invite you to visit downtown, enjoy the new parking area, and continue supporting our Main Street businesses," city officials said.

Last Chance: Summer Movies in the Park — 'Little Giants'

Here's what's happening nearby this Friday, August 21: Fayetteville's beloved free Summer Movies in the Park series wraps up its 2026 season with a screening of "Little Giants" (PG) at City Center Park, 210 Stonewall Avenue West.

The movie starts at sunset, and food will be available from local favorites Hog Pit BBQ, Ms. Pizza, and Scoops. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and the whole crew — this is a free event open to all families.

Why It Matters

Fayetteville is in the middle of a quiet but powerful downtown revival — and the people driving it are putting community connection at the center of it all.

Public art isn't just decoration. Studies consistently show that murals and art installations encourage people to slow down, explore local businesses, and stay longer in a commercial district. A painted bench might seem small, but it's a genuine invitation — an open chair that says, "Sit down. You belong here."

The Main Street Alley Plaza adds more than just parking — it creates a pedestrian-friendly corridor that connects businesses, makes the area feel more walkable, and signals to residents and visitors alike that downtown Fayetteville is a destination worth exploring.

And free movies in the park? That's simply a community saying to its families: "We see you. Here's an evening that belongs to all of us."

How This Impacts Our Community

These three developments paint a picture of a city investing in quality of life for every resident — not just businesses, not just visitors, but the everyday families who call Fayetteville home.

  • Local restaurants and shops directly benefit from more foot traffic in the downtown area.

  • Families — especially those with children — gain free, safe community experiences that build connection.

  • Artists like Eric Nine get to share their vision with broader audiences while being compensated to do meaningful work.

  • Homeowners see the long-term value of a thriving, beautiful downtown in their neighborhoods.

  • The placemaking strategy signals that more art, more public spaces, and more community programming is on the way.
