Highland Park Porch Crawl: Birmingham Neighbors Open Their Porches Sunday for Music, History and a Haunted Scavenger Hunt

If you’re reading this Sunday afternoon, grab a light jacket and head over to Highland Park in Birmingham, Alabama. Neighbors are opening their porches for a free, stroll-at-your-own-pace afternoon of music, history, and plain old good company. If you can’t make it today, stay with us, because this is the kind of idea every street in the Village can borrow.

What’s Happening Around the Village

“It’s Nice to Have You in Highland Park” is a free porch crawl in the historic Highland Park neighborhood of Birmingham (Jefferson County), Alabama. It runs Sunday, October 18, 2026, from 3 to 5 p.m. The Highland Park Neighborhood Association organizes it, and visitors wander through participating porches and businesses in any order they like.

According to Alabama Audubon, one of the participating stops, the afternoon includes live music, light refreshments, an historical scavenger hunt, and what they call “neighborly camaraderie.” It is free and open to the public, it happens rain or shine, and historic or other costumes are encouraged.

A few stops are worth knowing by name. Alabama Audubon’s Highland Park office is at 2835 Highland Avenue. Next door, Opera Birmingham says it will be performing live at Greenbriar at the Altamont, 2831 Highland Avenue South, from 3 to 5 p.m. Event listings also point visitors to the Birmingham Historical Society at 2827 Highland Avenue for the scavenger hunt, which this year has a haunted twist with music, costumes, and prizes.

When the crawl wraps up, the neighborhood keeps the party going. Local listings put the after-party at Rojo on Highland Avenue starting at 5 p.m. One friendly heads-up: a couple of older listings show slightly different start times, but the organizer partners and local event guides all say 3 to 5 p.m. Check the Highland Park Neighborhood Association’s event page for the latest map before you go.

Why It Matters

A porch is where a lot of us learned how a neighborhood works. It’s where somebody waves, somebody stops to talk, and a stranger turns into somebody you’d check on. A porch crawl turns that old habit into an event, and it costs nothing to join.

It also puts a spotlight on the buildings and stories that make a place feel like home. Highland Park’s historic homes, apartment buildings, churches, and small businesses are part of Birmingham’s story, and walking past them slowly is a different experience than driving by.

How This Impacts Our Community

Families get a no-cost Sunday outing with kids who can chase a scavenger hunt instead of a screen. History lovers get a peek at local landmarks and the people who look after them. Musicians and performers get a front-porch audience, and the small businesses along Highland Avenue get foot traffic from neighbors who might not have stopped in before.

Nonprofits benefit too. When groups like Alabama Audubon and Opera Birmingham open their doors for an afternoon like this, folks who might never attend a birding walk or an opera rehearsal get to say hello and see what they’re about.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Go today. The crawl runs until 5 p.m. Start at 2835 Highland Avenue or 2827 Highland Avenue and follow the music.

  • Dress the part. Historic and other costumes are encouraged, and the haunted scavenger hunt is a fun excuse to dig out a Halloween look early.

  • Stay for the after-party. Rojo on Highland Avenue kicks off at 5 p.m. Dine local and tip your servers well.

  • Say hello to the hosts. Thank the neighbors who opened their porches and ask how you can help next year.

  • Bring the idea home. Not in Birmingham? Invite three neighbors for lemonade on your porch this month. That’s a mini porch crawl, and the Village grows one porch at a time.

  • Share it. Send this post to a friend in the Birmingham area who loves history, music, or a good walk.

  • Sophie’s Mart 16 OZ Tumbler – A double-wall, spill-resistant tumbler keeps your coffee or cider warm while you stroll from porch to porch.

Around the Village Takeaway

A neighborhood doesn’t get closer by accident. It happens when somebody puts out a few chairs, turns on the porch light, and says, “Come on up.”
