November has a way of making us think about fresh starts: a new budget, a lighter bill, a little more peace of mind before the holidays. Down in Fairburn, Fulton County, GA, the City is stacking three practical opportunities into one month, and each one is built to help neighbors get ahead.

Pull up a chair and let's walk through what we verified, who it's for, and how to take part. For more neighborhood news across the South, keep an eye on Around The Village.

What's Happening Around the Village

Utility Amnesty: Through Monday, Nov. 30

The City of Fairburn is offering what its calendar calls Utilities Amnesty Week, described as a limited-time opportunity for residents to set up payment arrangements and sign up for levelized billing. The listing runs from Oct. 26 through Nov. 30, 2026, with a time of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Questions go to 770-964-2244, option 1.

In plain terms, a payment arrangement lets you spread out what you owe instead of facing it all at once, and levelized billing generally aims to even out your monthly bill. The listing does not spell out the fine print, such as eligibility rules or which fees may be affected, so please call the City or stop by City Hall at 314 NW Broad Street before you assume anything about your account.

Dominate Your Credit, Part 2: Thursday, Nov. 12

Mayor Hattie Portis-Jones is hosting a four-part credit series led by Dr. Sonya Hamm of Hamm Financial Group. Part 1 took place Nov. 5. Part 2, titled Strategic Debt Demolition and Goal Mapping, is set for Thursday, Nov. 12, from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at Fairburn City Hall, 56 Malone Street SW.

According to the City, the session covers how to pay down high-interest balances, how interest compounds, the Snowball and Avalanche methods of paying off debt, and how to set short-term goals with budget adjustments. Registration is required through the City's sign-up link. The City's social posts invite Fairburn residents and city employees and describe the series as free. If you live outside Fairburn, call City Hall at 770-964-2244 to ask whether you can join. The page we reviewed did not list dates for Parts 3 and 4, so check the registration page for those.

Community Blood Drive: Friday, Nov. 20

The City of Fairburn is partnering with the American Red Cross for a community blood drive on Friday, Nov. 20, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Fairburn Annex, 40 Washington Street. Appointments are recommended and can be made online through the American Red Cross.

The City suggests eating an iron-rich meal, drinking plenty of water, bringing a valid photo ID, and completing your health history ahead of time using the Red Cross RapidPass system. Donors may also be eligible for incentives such as gift cards and Blood Donor Rewards points; the Red Cross website currently advertises a thank-you offer for donations between Oct. 19 and Nov. 22, so read the terms when you book.

Why It Matters

Money stress and the holidays tend to arrive together. A bill that has fallen behind can feel heavy, and many of us have been afraid to even open the envelope. A city that opens the door to payment arrangements, and pairs it with a free-to-attend class on credit, is saying: you are not in this alone.

Giving blood is the other side of the same coin. It is one of the simplest ways to look after people we may never meet, and hospitals depend on donations being steady, not just during emergencies.

How This Impacts Our Community

  • Utility customers: Households that are behind, or that struggle with big seasonal swings in their bills, have a defined window to ask about payment arrangements and levelized billing.

  • Families building credit: Young adults, first-time homebuyers, and anyone rebuilding after a hard season can learn a clear method for tackling debt.

  • City employees: The series is also open to City of Fairburn employees, according to the City's announcements.

  • Patients and hospitals: Every donation helps cover surgeries, cancer treatment, and emergency care, as the City's blood drive notice describes.

  • Nearby neighbors: Fairburn sits just outside Union City and South Fulton, so folks in surrounding communities can point friends and relatives to these resources.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Call about your utility account. Reach out at 770-964-2244, option 1, before Nov. 30 and ask exactly how payment arrangements and levelized billing work for you.

  • Register for Part 2. Use the City's sign-up link before Nov. 12 and bring a notebook and your questions.

  • Book your blood donation. Schedule an appointment through the Red Cross and finish your RapidPass health history in advance to save time.

  • Be someone's ride. If an older neighbor wants to attend the class or the drive but doesn't drive, offer a lift.

  • Share the word. Text a friend, mention it at church, or post it in your neighborhood group so the people who need it can find it.

  • Plan around closures. City offices will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day and Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27 for Thanksgiving, so schedule your calls and visits early.

If you are also planning to honor veterans on Nov. 11, take a look at our Veterans Day Week roundup for ceremonies around the region.
