Free Dental Care, Sonny Terry's 115th Birthday & a Harvest Jubilee: Your Greensboro & Greene County, GA Weekend

Some weekends feel like the whole village is leaning in, and this one in Greensboro and Greene County, Georgia, is one of them. It starts with free dental care tomorrow morning, carries on with a hometown blues legend's 115th birthday, and wraps up with neighbors raising money for neighbors over barbecue and hayrides.

If you have a few free hours between now and Halloween, here is your porch-side guide to what's happening, what it costs (mostly nothing), and how you can pitch in.

What's Happening Around the Village

Friday, Oct. 23: Free Dental Care at "Smiles from the Heart"

Lake Oconee Dentistry, at 1011 Parkside Main in Greensboro, will hold its annual Smiles from the Heart event on Friday, October 23. Adults 18 and older can receive one free cleaning, filling, or extraction on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration runs from 7:30 a.m. to noon, and you must be registered to receive treatment.

According to the practice's event page, Drs. David and Patti Bradley and Dr. David Miller of Lake Oconee Oral Surgery volunteer their time, and the day has been held since 2010. The community calendar listing says the team treats the first 100 patients and possibly more as time allows, and that the event has provided nearly $400,000 in free dental care over the years. No advance registration is required. Questions can go to 706-453-1333, and it's smart to bring water and snacks in case there's a wait.

Oct. 23–24: Sonny Terry Day at Greene County Library

Greene County is celebrating its native son, blues harmonica master Sonny Terry, on what would have been his 115th birthday, October 24. Born Saunders Terrell on a tenant farm outside Greensboro in 1911, Terry became one of the most influential harmonica players in American music, famous for his whoops, hollers, and train imitations. He performed on Broadway, toured internationally with guitarist Brownie McGhee, and appeared in the film version of The Color Purple, according to Lake Oconee News.

The Greene County Library will host two programs. On Friday, Oct. 23, blues artist and living-history performer Veronika Jackson leads a program in the library's conference room from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 24, musician, independent scholar, and award-winning author Orice Jenkins takes over from noon to 3 p.m. The events are sponsored by the Greene County African American Museum and Friends and Supporters of Sonny Terry's Life and Legacy. Admission details weren't listed in the announcements we reviewed, so check with the library before you go.

Saturday, Oct. 24: Harvest Jubilee in White Plains

Liberty United Methodist Church, founded in 1786, will host its 2nd Annual Harvest Jubilee from 6 to 9 p.m. at 3091 Liberty Church Road in White Plains. Expect live music, pit-smoked barbecue, hayrides, a fire pit with s'mores, cake walks, games, and a silent auction. Admission is free, and everyone is invited.

This year's proceeds will benefit Neighbors Helping Neighbors, which serves individuals and families in need across Greene and Putnam Counties. Last year's Jubilee raised $4,000. Raffle tickets for a Pit Boss Austin XL Pellet Grill are $10 each and available from Liberty UMC members.

Sunday Through Halloween Week: Fall Fun for the Kids

Families have plenty to choose from. First Methodist Church Greensboro–Lake Oconee hosts a free Fall Festival with games, food, crafts, and Trunk or Treat on Sunday, Oct. 25, from noon to 2 p.m. at its Lake Oconee Campus. On Wednesday, Oct. 28, the community calendar lists a free Halloween Fright Night at 6 p.m. at the Greene County Recreation soccer fields, with trick-or-treat booths, food vendors, and a costume parade. Then on Thursday, Oct. 29, the City of Greensboro and Greene County High School present the free Trick or Treat in Tiger Country from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Why It Matters

A dental bill is often the one that gets put off, and a toothache doesn't wait for payday. A free cleaning, filling, or extraction can mean real relief for a neighbor who has been toughing it out, and the doctors and staff giving their Friday to do it are the kind of folks who make a small town feel like home.

Sonny Terry Day matters for a different reason: it reminds us that world-class talent grew up on Greene County soil. Telling that story to our kids keeps local history alive. If it leaves you hungry for more community heritage, see our recap of Unity Weekend in Aiken, SC.

How This Impacts Our Community

The people who benefit most are close to home: uninsured and underinsured adults who can get care tomorrow, families looking for safe and affordable Halloween fun, students and music lovers who get a front-row seat to local heritage, and the households that Neighbors Helping Neighbors serves in Greene and Putnam Counties. Local businesses, churches, and clubs also get a chance to meet their neighbors at the Tiger Country trick-or-treat night.

How You Can Get Involved

  • Need dental care? Arrive early on Friday and register at Lake Oconee Dentistry by noon. Know someone who could use it? Offer them a ride or pass along the phone number, 706-453-1333.

  • Stop by the Greene County Library on Friday or Saturday for Sonny Terry Day, and bring a young person who might be inspired by a hometown harmonica hero.

  • Come out to the Harvest Jubilee on Saturday evening, bring a neighbor, and consider a $10 raffle ticket from a Liberty UMC member to support Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

  • Local businesses, churches, and clubs: Trick or Treat in Tiger Country vendor participation forms are due October 24. Vendors bring their own table and should plan treats for more than 700 children.

  • Want to volunteer? Organizers of Halloween Fright Night on Oct. 28 are seeking vendors and volunteers.

  • Share this post with a neighbor who might want to know about the free dental day before noon tomorrow.
