Sophie Scholarship Recipient Spotlight: Danielle Zeff Wants to Transform Teen Mental Health Care

At Sophie’s Mart, the Sophie Scholarship is about investing in students who see education as more than a path toward personal success. We want to support young people who dream of using what they learn to make life better for others.

One of our recent recipients, Danielle Zeff, has a vision rooted in compassion, mental health advocacy, and making sure young people know they are supported.

Turning Personal Experience Into Purpose

Danielle’s goal is to become a psychologist, with interests in psychology and the sciences as she pursues higher education.

But becoming a psychologist is only the beginning of her vision.

Danielle hopes to eventually create her own residential treatment facility for teenagers—one designed around making young people feel understood, supported, and empowered during some of the most difficult periods of their lives.

Her motivation comes from personal experience.

As a teenager, Danielle experienced times when she felt alone and unsupported. Rather than allowing those experiences to define what comes next, she wants to use them to help shape a better experience for the teenagers who come after her.

Her long-term goal is to help young people grow into confident, caring, and productive members of their communities.

What the Sophie Scholarship Means to Danielle

Danielle was awarded the S.O.P.H.I.E. Scholarship, helping ease some of the financial challenges that come with pursuing higher education.

In her thank-you letter, Danielle explained that the support gives her more freedom to focus on her studies and her goal of becoming a psychologist.

She also shared something that beautifully connects her journey to the purpose behind this scholarship:

“Knowing that this scholarship honors the legacy of Sophie Youmans and her dedication to serving others inspires me to continue giving back in meaningful ways. I’m honored to carry on Sophie Youmans’s legacy through this scholarship.”

Danielle wrote that receiving the award gave her a renewed sense of purpose and strengthened her desire to continue giving back in meaningful ways.

That cycle—someone investing in you, so one day you can invest in someone else—is exactly what we mean when we talk about building the Village.

A Future Where Teens Feel Heard

Mental health care can have an enormous impact on a young person’s future, and Danielle wants to be part of improving that experience.

Her dream isn't simply to work in mental health care. She wants to eventually build something of her own that gives teenagers the support and sense of belonging she knows can matter so deeply.

The Sophie Scholarship is proud to play a small role in helping Danielle take the next step toward that vision.
