Free Dental Care Day in Greensboro, GA: Smiles from the Heart Is Friday, Oct. 23
If you’ve been putting off a toothache, a cleaning, or that filling you keep promising yourself you’ll get to, this Friday morning in Greensboro, Georgia, could be your day. Lake Oconee Dentistry is bringing back its annual “Smiles from the Heart” event, offering free dental care to adults on a first-come, first-served basis.
And while you’re over in Greene County, there’s a whole week of free, neighborly fall fun waiting, from a church harvest festival to a salute to a hometown blues legend. Pull up a chair, because there’s a lot of good news on this porch.
What’s Happening Around the Village
On Friday, Oct. 23, Lake Oconee Dentistry and Lake Oconee Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center will host Smiles from the Heart at 1011 Parkside Main in Greensboro, Greene County. Adults ages 18 and older can choose one free cleaning, filling, or extraction.
Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and closes at noon, and patients must be registered to receive treatment. Care is offered first-come, first-served. Event listings say the dental team will see the first 100 patients and possibly more as time allows, and no advance registration is required. The practice’s event page names Drs. David and Patti Bradley and their team, along with Dr. David Miller of Lake Oconee Oral Surgery, as the providers.
The practice has hosted this event since 2010, and local listings report that it has provided nearly $400,000 in free dental care over the years. The office suggests bringing water and snacks since there may be a wait. Questions? Call the office at 706-453-1333.
Why It Matters
Dental care is one of those needs that quietly slides down the list when budgets get tight. A small problem can turn into a painful, expensive one, and for many neighbors a cleaning or a filling is the difference between a comfortable week and a miserable one.
The practice says it started this event to serve people who cannot afford the dental care they need, and the doctors and team members volunteer their time to make it happen. That’s the village at its best: neighbors with a skill sharing it with neighbors who need it.
How This Impacts Our Community
The most direct benefit goes to adults in and around Greene County who are uninsured, underinsured, or simply between paychecks. Because the event is open to anyone 18 and older, it can reach working parents, retirees, and young adults just starting out. Greensboro is also an easy trip for neighbors in surrounding Lake Oconee communities.
There’s a ripple effect, too. When someone can chew comfortably, sleep through the night, and smile at a job interview without worry, the whole community feels it. If you know someone who has been avoiding the dentist because of cost, this is a great moment to make a phone call or offer a ride.
More Fall Fun Around Greene County
Dental day is just the start. Here’s what else local organizers have on the calendar over the next week or so.
Honoring Sonny Terry, Greene County’s Blues Harmonica Legend
The Greene County Library in Greensboro, in partnership with the Greene County African American Museum, Inc., will host special programs on Oct. 23 and 24 celebrating the legacy of Sonny Terry. Terry was born in Greensboro on Oct. 24, 1911, and became one of the best-known harmonica players in American blues, famously performing alongside guitarist Brownie McGhee. The event listing doesn’t spell out the daily schedule, so check with the library before you head over.
Harvest Jubilee in White Plains
On Saturday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 9 p.m., Liberty United Methodist Church (3091 Liberty Church Road, White Plains) hosts its 2nd Annual Harvest Jubilee. Admission is free, and the evening includes live music, pit-smoked barbecue, hayrides, a fire pit with s’mores, cake walks, games, a silent auction, and a raffle for a Pit Boss Austin XL Pellet Grill. Proceeds benefit Neighbors Helping Neighbors, which serves individuals and families in need across Greene and Putnam counties. Last year’s Jubilee raised $4,000 for the cause.
Costumes, Candy, and Trunk-or-Treat
Halloween season is in full swing. The Greene County Library’s 4th Annual Costume Swap bin has been open since Oct. 1, inviting neighbors to donate new or gently used costumes and browse for free. Then come the free community events: a Fall Festival with games, food, crafts, and Trunk or Treat at First Methodist Church Greensboro–Lake Oconee on Sunday, Oct. 25, from noon to 2 p.m.; Halloween Fright Night with trick-or-treat booths, food vendors, and a costume parade on Wednesday, Oct. 28; and Trick or Treat in Tiger Country at Greene County High School on Thursday, Oct. 29.
How You Can Get Involved
Go early on Friday. Registration runs 7:30 a.m. to noon at Lake Oconee Dentistry, and care is first-come, first-served. Pack water, snacks, and a little patience.
Spread the word. Tell a neighbor, a coworker, or someone at church who might need dental care, and offer a ride if they don’t have transportation.
Back a good cause. Come out to the Harvest Jubilee on Oct. 24. Raffle tickets for the grill are $10 each from Liberty UMC members, and proceeds help Neighbors Helping Neighbors.
Volunteer or set up a booth. Halloween Fright Night organizers are seeking vendors and volunteers. Groups that want a booth at Trick or Treat in Tiger Country must submit participation forms by Oct. 24 and plan on enough treats for more than 700 children.
Share a costume. Drop off or pick up a costume at the Greene County Library’s Costume Swap and keep Halloween budget-friendly.
Learn the story. Stop by the library’s Sonny Terry programs on Oct. 23 or 24 and meet a piece of Greene County history.

Kids Pirate Costume Set | Boys Halloween Cosplay Outfit: a ready-to-wear option for trick-or-treat night.
Sophie’s Mart 16 OZ Tumbler: handy for the water the dental team suggests bringing if you’re waiting your turn.
